Leader repeats warnings of ideological lapse (27.2.2001)

Tehran, Feb 27, IRNA -- The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyed-Ali Khamenei, here Tuesday repeated his warnings against any national tendency to succumb to any elements of the western-style culture and laic ideology that are against the platform of the Islamic Revolution. Ayatollah Khamenei who was addressing students and the academy of Amir Kabir University of Technology in Tehran also reminded the urgency to rely on an indigenous alternative to the western educational packages consistent with the Islamic and national idealism. He also disapproved of any conservatism if it should tend to keep the nation or the college stagnant. The leader of the Islamic Revolution repeated his warnings of cultural and political challenges to the Islamic Revolution by the U.S. saying that Washington still seeks to frustrate Iranians and transmute them into a nation of passive pawns and eventually enlist them in the American cultural regiment worldwide to impress the world by the size of its cultural army. He underlined the importance of scientific innovation and fighting against dogmatism and warned the university students against blind imitation of the western theories. Addressing the students and lecturers at Amirkabir University of Technology, the Leader expressed pleasure with being among the youth and described them as brilliant stars in the sky of the future of Iran and a blend of science, faith, knowledge, intellectualism, religious and revolutionary passion. The Leader said scientific innovation is among the ideal and main tasks of the universities and added dogmatism is a calamity in all environments and the way to confront it is the creation of the culture of innovation in the field of science. The Supreme Leader said scientific power and courage are two necessary conditions for scientific innovation and stressed that the educated youth should make ceaseless efforts to strengthen the scientific potential of the country since without the realization of such a goal, Iran will fall behind in all fields and confrontation with the bullying powers of the world would not be fully possible. Ayatollah Khamenei drew a separating line between scientific innovation and scientific anarchism and said while science should be acquired from all, it is necessary, by using appropriate techniques, to avoid being a mere consumer of foreign scientific products and create a kind of collective self-awareness on the western domineering culture in academic environments. The Leader criticized the attitude of `translating' and continuous using of outdated scientific products and said the universities are expected to break the dogmas and create an all-out and deep software revolution in the country so that the men of science can erect a flourishing, free and just society based on Islamic ideas and values. Ayatollah Khamenei pointed to the efforts made by the hegemonistic powers for fabricating theories and giving shape to the beliefs and criteria of nations and said the ultimate objective of cultural onslaughts is changing the values of nations based on the demands and outlooks of the arrogant powers. The Leader warned the students against western pseudo-intellectual theories and said the enemies, having seen their failure in other fronts, have resorted to cultural war and unfortunately some people inside the country try to give a local shape to the theories and the words of the enemies, a fact that all should watch out. Referring to the theories like globalization and the shift in international discourse of the students, Ayatollah Khamenei said the essence of such pseudo theories is going towards the West and transforming nations into mere soldiers in the American regiment to give it a more impressive size. The Ayatollah pointed to the complete monopolism of international powers and said in practice, they do not permit the least harm to western interests, principles and ideas but as far as Iranian interests, principles and ideas are concerned, they feel the liberty to attack them under pretexts such as pluralism and various interpretations. The Leader sharply criticized conservative ideas and said conservatism which means remaining at present and having no ambitions in various fields is the slaughterhouse of the Revolution and this is the reason why the universities should climb up the ladder of progress with principled measures. Ayatollah Khamenei said reformism is blended with the spirit of the Revolution but it should not be a political gesture just to attract people or justify the affairs. Genuine reformism is a basic need of the society and everyone, including the students and the officials should be reformers in the real sense of word, added the Leader. "American reformism is the very reactionism and backwardness and the people of Iran will not permit the foreigners to interpret reformism for them," said Ayatollah Khamenei. The Leader rejected the idea that the third generation in any revolution is necessarily separated from the revolutionary ideals and values and said if the ideas of a revolution can appeal to various generations, the revolution will last forever and the ideals of the Islamic Revolution such as justice-seeking, independence seeking and freedom loving will be appealing for all generations. On the issue of freedom, the Supreme Leader said freedom is the natural right of all people and added in Islamic outlook, individual, partisan, collective or any other kind of dictatorship is a tragedy. He underlined the acquisition of the culture of freedom and said those people who intend to create anarchy so that the society gets thirsty for the emergence of a powerful man and those who play with the faith and emotions of people are both the enemies of freedom and defame it. The Leader said those who utter the word of freedom but are not committed to its culture and requirements, are enemies of freedom and from now on, the officials of the Islamic regime neither intend nor are entitled to tolerate those who abuse freedom and move against the interests and destiny of the country. Ayatollah Khamenei said any measure intended to overthrow the regime would be a 'Muharebah' (instance of armed political belligerency) and the verdict against such measure is clear in any government and system. Following his speech, the Leader responded to questions raised by the students. A student asked him about banning the press by the judiciary and the Leader said the existence of the press for sincere and transparent information dissemination, criticism and supervision and the freedom of the press and speech based on the Constitution is the right of people but some people should not think that the public opinion is a free zone in which they can make harm to the faith, emotions, beliefs and sanctities of people with wrong analyses, making rumors, defamation and lies. The Leader said supervision on the press is first of all with the governmental establishments and if they fail to do their duties, then the judiciary should do the job. Responding to another question on investigation into those government establishments which are directly run by managers appointed by the Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei said no government establishment should be excluded from being inspected and investigated. On the issue of violence, Ayatollah Khamenei said while he is opposed to violence committed by any faction, the enemies of the country such as the United States and the Zionist regime of Israel with their bloody hands have no right to accuse the Revolution, the Imam and the Islamic values as being violent.

Elsewhere in his speech, the Supreme leader said that the government should guarantee the rights of the youth by providing them with education and social services to promote their talents and families too are required to respect their obligations toward their children and help them move in the right direction.
