leader calls for unity among political factions (25.12.1998)

tehran, dec. 25, irna -- the leader of the islamic revolution ayatollah Seyyid Ali Khamene’i urged the political factions in the country to set aside their disputes and get united. "no matter how powerful and rich a nation may be, as soon as there are differences among them and these differences are aggravated they would suffer misery," the leader warned in his address to thousands of friday prayer goers at tehran university campus and nearby streets on the first friday of the holy month of ramadhan. by differences, he said, he did not mean differences of taste and policy. "i mean political confrontations which would cause tension," he noted. "for the same reason, i (recently) criticized some newspapers but they cried out that there is freedom. i myself am a strong advocate of freedom (of expression). but there are some who are taking advantage of this freedom to create tension in society. some of these newspapers choose their main headlines in a way to pit people against one another. our press must work to bring the political factions closer to each other. they should not exaggerate the existing differences.

"of course, the people pay no attention to these factional tendencies and groupings. the hearts of the people will be broken to see there are differences among the high level officials. differences of opinion are fine but antagonism is bad," the leader said. he urged the political factions not to undermine each other

because, he added, this is exactly what the foreign propaganda machines, including foreign radio services, are doing against iran. the leader said that iranian nation succeeded to overthrow the shah's regime, make the revolution, and leave behind eight years of the iraqi imposed war through their unity of expression. "and today, we are powerfully standing against the hostilities of the enemies, particularly the u.s. who continues to be a staunch adversary of our people. do not let the enemies divide your ranks," ayatollah Khamene’i stated.

leader says no reconciliation with u.s. (25.12.1998)

tehran, dec. 25, irna -- the supreme leader ayatollah Seyyid Ali Khamene’i friday reiterated that the iranian nation and government will not reconcile with the united states as long as that government continued its ill intentions against the islamic system and people. addressing a large group of muslim worshippers at the tehran university campus and its nearby streets, the leader repeated an earlier statement that iran had no enmity with the american people but that it did not trust the american government. "the u.s. government wants to be the only ruler in the whole world and this is what the americans themselves are admitting, through their political articles published in hundreds and thousands. "our problem with the u.s. is not one of (resumption) of relations. the u.s. wants to dictate its policies to other governments, particularly the weak countries in the region. the aim of the u.s. is hegemony nor relations. they want to plunder rather than have an exchange (with iran). they want to again enjoy the political, economic and security benefits they had for 30 years under the former regime." the supreme leader said iran was eager to have normal relations with the entire world and was improving its ties with europe, russia, asia, africa and all other countries in the world every day. he said the u.s. government was wrongly assuming that the iranian people have turned their back to the revolution, the late imam and to their ideals and therefor washington was looking for pretexts to dominate iran again. "don't ever think that our nation will give in to your pressures and bullying. as long as this nation stands by islam, they would not come to terms with you," he assured washington.

turning to the recent us-british military strikes against iraq, the leader said the attacks had taken place on "false excuses". "when they started their attacks, they said they would continue as long as they deemed it necessary irrespective of the holy month of ramadhan. but after the lapse of a few days, they had to stop these attack because of their own domestic political and factional problems. they too were greatly suffering from internal differences and disputes," said the tehran leader of the friday prayers. he also slammed the u.s. for its interventions in all spots of crisis in the world. "whenever there is a problem in afghanistan, in the persian gulf, in the middle east, in europe, etc. the u.s. interferes. why?" wondered the supreme leader. however, he noted, the islamic republic of iran was the only country who dared to object to these interventions "with might and courage." he said that the u.s. in its relations with iran would not be satisfied to anything less than domination. "iraq too has relations with the u.s.," he said, referring to the ill intentions of washington against baghdad despite these ties. "the u.s. government has also relations with the syrian government but each year syria is cited in the list of terrorist countries published by the u.s.," he noted.

leader condemns recent spate of murders in iran (14.12.1998)

tehran, dec. 14, irna -- leader of the islamic revolution ayatollah Seyyid Ali Khamene’i on monday condemned the current spate of killings in tehran as being engineered, directly or indirectly, by the global arrogance. four iranian writers and veteran political activist dariush foruhar along with his wife parvaneh were mysteriously killed in tehran within a month. the supreme leader said the enemy has attempted to portray iran as an insecure country and the western media are working hard to attribute the murders to the islamic republic in a bid to suggest that the government and the judicial and security authorities of the islamic republic are unable to provide security for iran. ''the murder of iranian citizens, whoever they might be, is a crime and an act against the national security. as i have already noted to the interior ministry, information ministry and judicial system, they are required to seriously follow up the crimes committed in the last month,'' the leader said. ayatollah Khamene’i said there is no doubt that the direct and indirect hands of the enemy involved in recent events, will become known after investigations. the supreme leader said the recent events are complementary to the arrogance's conspiracies ''but, the enemies of the iranian nation should know that the brave nation which displayed its heroic sacred defence and destroyed the bastion of the u.s. in the middle east, the pahlavi dynasty, and have stood alone over the past 20 years to every brutal plot will not retreat even a single step from its islamic and revolutionary causes.''
