IRI Leader rules out rigging in the polls

(May 21, 1997)

Tehran radio, Wednesday, may 21, 1997

Iran's paramount Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei pledged that the country's presidential election would be free and fair, rejecting rumors that it was rigged in favor of one candidate. "This rumor comes from the enemy," Ayatollah Khamenei told a televised public meeting ahead of Friday's election. "No one dares to manipulate the vote, not even one vote." "I myself will closely follow up the voting process and will not allow any entity to commit an unlslämic act incompatible with the social and political norms."

"No violation will happen during the presidential polls and I am determined to save the elections from any possible rigging," the supreme Leader vowed. "They have distorted the well-intended words of our President" Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, who warned officials last week of vote-rigging, Ayatollah Khamenei added.

"This is against Islamic and civil laws," said Khamenei, who is the country's highest political, religious and military authority. Rafsanjani pleaded last week with officials against any fraud, saying it risks alienating the people from the government. After his remarks, newspapers supporting the two main candidates, Majlis Speaker Ali Akbar Nateq-Nouri and former culture and Islamic guidance minister Seyed Mohammad Khatami, accused each other of seeking to manipulate the vote in their favor. Ayatollah Khamenei also urged people to turn out en masse to "disappoint and hurt the enemy." He said that voting in the upcoming presidential elections is in fact voting for the independence of the country and for allegiance to the System and leadership.

Ayatollah Khamenei was speaking in a meeting with the families of prisoners of war (pows) and those missing in action (mias). The leader said the presidential election is a populär move and a great national and Islamic test, adding that efforts should be made to hold the election in a healthy and orderly manner as prescribed by Islam. "The election campaign is one of most serious issues for a learned nation.

There is no kidding at all. It is like serious athletic competitions which cannot be coupled with indecent and inappropriate acts. Therefore, the atmosphere of eleetion in a country whose nation adheres to ethics, morality and faith should not cause annoyance," Ayatollah Khamenei remarked.
